Publishing Tips Publishing Tips

This is our collection of helpful hints and ideas for helping you publish your Overcasts and Overcast Series.

How do I publish an Overcast that I have created?
To publish your Overcast at overcastmedia.com, simply sign in to your overcastmedia.com User Account and go to your my account page by clicking on the "my account" link in the upper-right corner of any page.
The 'upload a new ovecast' button
From your my account page, click on the "upload a new overcast" button to begin uploading.

Providing information and previews about your Overcast
When you upload an Overcast, you have the opportunity to provide information about your Overcast and its associated video. The information you provide appears on the Overcast Info page for your Overcast and can help your audience discover your Overcast and locate the proper video.

A good Overcast Info page consists of information about the Overcast, a preview image of the Overcast, a preview video of the Overcast and information about the video. Adding this information begins in Studio using the Project Info... dialog. When you upload your Overcast to overcastmedia.com, the information saved with your Overcast file is automatically loaded to the proper fields in the upload overcast pages.

How can I easily find information about a TV show or movie?
We recommend IMDB for finding information about television shows and movies.

How can I find a good image to represent my Overcast?
If you'd like to use an image from the show, you do this easily from within Studio. With your Overcast project loaded in Studio, position the playhead at an interesting scene and click the "Set Preview Picture" button.

If you'd like to use an image that you've created or an image from another site, you can load an image saved to your PC using the "Set Preview Picture" dialog. There are two good options for finding a great image to represent Overcasts:

1. Use Google or Yahoo image search
2. Use any of the tv-related information services mentioned above

What's the best size for an Overcast Image?
If you create .jpg image that is 215 pixels wide by 135 pixels tall, your image will be displayed exactly like it looks on your screen. If you create an image with different dimensions, the image will be resized and/or stretched to 215x135 which may result in visual artifacts.
We automatically resize this image for use in Overcast List thumbnails so you don't need to create or submit separate thumbnail images.

How do I create a preview video for my Overcast?
Preview videos are short video previews of your Overcast. You can upload them to your Overcast Info page to let viewers see a portion of your Overcast before they download it. You may also post your preview to your blog, MySpace page or to any video sharing service.

To create a preview video, open your Overcast project in Studio. Using the timeline, position the playhead or make a selection in the timeline and select "File/Export Preview Video..." to create the video preview file.

The download video button Providing a video download link for your Overcast
You can make it easier for your audience to acquire the video for your Overcast by sharing a link to a download location if that video is available online for purchase or download. If you've created an Overcast for a tv show that can be purchased with the Amazon Unbox service, copy the URL from the episode's Unbox page to the video download link field. If you've created an Overcast for a DivX Stage6 video, right-click on the download link for that video to copy the video's URL from it's properties dialog. If the download link contains an URL, the "download video" button will appear in the video section of your Overcast's information page.

How do I change information about my Overcast?
To edit your information about your Overcast, go to your my account page and locate the Overcast you would like to edit in the "my overcasts" list. To the right of each Overcast in the list, you'll find an "edit" button which will open up a page where you can make modifications to the information about your Overcast.

What if I've created a new version of my Overcast?
No problem. You can use "edit" link next to an Overcast in your my account page. From the "edit your overcast" page, you can use the browse field under "Select the Overcast you want to upload". Find the new file version of your Overcast. When you click the "save info" button, the newly selected Overcast file will be uploaded and will replace the previous version.

How do I remove my Overcast from overcastmedia.com?
To remove your Overcast, go to your my account page and find your Overcast in the "my overcasts" list. To the right of each Overcast in the list, you'll find an "delete" button. Clicking on the "delete" button presents a "yes" button as a confirmation step. Clicking on "yes" removes the Overcast and all of its community information (e.g. ratings and comments) from overcastmedia.com

Creating an Overcast Series
Overcast Series are collections of related Overcasts. You can publish Overcasts individually or, if you're creating related Overcasts that belong to a set, you can create an Overcast Series to represent your collection. To create an Overcast Series, go to your my account page and select the "create a new series" button. From the "create an overcast series" page, you can name your Overcast Series, load Overcast Series thumbnail and banner pictures and provide TV series information if your Overcast Series is about a particular TV Series.

Assigning an Overcast to an Overcast Series
When you upload or edit an Overcast that you have published, you can choose to assign your Overcast to an Overcast Series that you've created using the Overcast Series drop-down menu in the "Edit series information" section.

Creating Overcast Series Thumbnail and Banner Pictures
The Overcast Series Thumbnail and Banner pictures can represent you and/or your Overcast Series. The Overcast Series Thumbnail (215 x 135 pixels) is typically used in list views at overcastmedia.com. The Overcast Series Banner (900 x 100 pixels) is used on Overcast Series and Overcast Info pages.

Deleting an Overcast Series
You can delete any Overcast Series that you have published. Caution: deleting an Overcast Series will also delete any assigned Overcasts at the same time. If you wish to keep any Overcasts assigned to an Overcast Series, be sure to re-assign those Overcasts to another Overcast Series or to "none" before deleting the Overcast Series.
