General Troubleshooting
One of our key goals with our beta program is to learn what's working, what's not working and what could be working better. If you're having trouble with the Overcast Software or have ideas how to improve the Overcast experience, please review the material in this Help section. You can also communicate with us or with the Overcast community in the community forum section. Finally, don't hesitate to email us directly at support@overcastmedia.com. Thank you!

Video Playback Issues
If you have any problems with video playback, check these items before reporting the issue to Overcast Media:

- A good first test is to see if you video is working properly with Windows Media Player. If not, visit the Windows Media site.
- Make sure you have the current DivX codec installed from www.divx.com for proper DivX and Xvid playback.
- Make sure you are running the latest version of the display driver for your graphics hardware.
- Make sure you have the latest version of the directx installed, it can be downloaded from: www.microsoft.com/windows/directx.
- If you still have video playback problem try disabling DirectDraw and Direct3D hardware acceleration:
  • DirectDraw

    • Open the DirectX applet from the control panel

    • Select the DirectDraw tab

    • Uncheck the "Use hardware Acceleration" checkbox in the performance section

  • Direct3D

    • Open the DirectX applet from the control panel

    • Select the Direct3D tab

    • Uncheck the "Use hardware Acceleration" checkbox

  • If video play backs correctly with some of the hardware acceleration disabled then your display driver has some issues, than can only be fixed with an updated driver from your graphics card vendor.
Windows Media Player 11
WMP 11 may require updates to your video card’s device drivers. If you’ve installed WMP 11, please check with your video card manufacturer’s website for updates. Older drivers do not always properly handle the new codecs installed by WMP 11 (e.g. the 2005 nVideo GeForce 6800 on Dell M170 XPS laptops.) Check the manufacturer's website for updates.

DivX and Xvid
For DivX or Xvid video, if you're experiencing playback with no audio or synchronization problems then you may need an AC3 filter/audio decoder. An AC3 filter/audio decoder can be found here.

InterVideo Codecs
We have seen the following issues with mpeg and dvr-ms file formats with InterVideo codecs prior to version 8:

- Black & white thumbnails
- Blank thumbnails with HD content
- Rare crashes when creating a project or exporting an overcast

You can determine your Intervideo codec version by viewing the file properties of %ProgramFiles%\Intervideo\Common\Bin\ivivideo.ax. To fix, we recommend upgrading the codec. We've had good experiences with Cyberlink PowerDVD. A free trial is available here.

Silent Video Playback Issues
The current version does not support silent video sources. We'll fix this in an upcoming release.
